Birmingham, Alabama
MLK started demonstrations in Birmingham to try and gain support from the president to see how the African Americans views of civil rights differ from the ones of whites. Only after eight days of protesting, Martin Luther King was arrested. While he was in jail, he wrote a "Letter from Birmingham Jail" stating a defense for the reason of the nonviolent protests that got him arrested. One of the most famous lines of the letter was, "there are two types of laws: just and unjust." This is stating that any law that isn't for the good of the people, the people have the moral responsibility to disobey it while laws that are for the good of the people are just.
Bull Connor
Bull Connor was the Commissioner of Public Safety for Birmingham, Alabama. He was known for being an absolute racist against African Americans. By showing the demand for water hoses to be used on activists, the United States saw realized what they were doing to African Americans. This realization led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Children's March
Young people walked the streets while marching in groups. Many of the children were attacked and arrested by police.

This law made segregation illegal in most places throughout the public. This act also gave citizens of any race or nationality equal access to public facilities.
