Role of the governor of Arkansas and President Eisenhower
Following the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education, nine African American students were to be admitted into Little Rock High School for the following school year. This would be the first time whites and blacks would not be segregated in a learning environment. Little Rock High School was a all white high school before the Little Rock Nine came. As one would guess, this ruling of the nine students going to the same school as whites created national riots. The governor, Faubus, called in the coast guard to keep the students from entering the school but had to retreat on his decision when President Eisenhower ordered that the students be admitted to the high school.
Little Rock Nine
The Little Rock Nine were African American high school students that were the first blacks to be placed into an all white school, which would end segregation in the education system.
Effects
Of course, the desegregation in public schools would take time, but a revolution in the education system was on its way. After a year of the Little Rock Nine enrollment into Little Rock High School, the board of education took a vote to see if the people were for or against segregation in Alabama Public Schools. Because of the persistence of the whites, the vote was won by a landslide that was for segregation in public schools. The school then closed to wait for the government to think of a possible solution to the problem.
