Malcom X and the Nation of Islam
Malcom X grew up in Michigan where his house was burned down and his father was murdered due to the KKK. This sparked a hatred for whites in his mind. The older Malcom got, the more he wanted to move to Harlem. He eventually got into the wrong things with the wrong people and ended up serving jail time for his actions. Throughout jail, Malcom became a very intellectual and intelligent man. He put all his trust into the Nation of Islam, which was created in the 1930's. The reason for
Malcom X to gravitate towards the Nation of Islam is simple. The Nation of Islam is mixing black pride with black nationalism, which sparks the interest of Malcom X.
Martin Luther King v. Malcom X
Comparisons:
Both men were some of the most well known African American leaders.
Both men were ministers and victims of assassinations.
Both played significant parts in the Civil Rights Movement.
Contrast:
MLK was a Christian while Malcom X hated Christianity and became a Black Muslim
MLK looked forward to the time when blacks and whites would sit down at a table of brotherhood while Malcom X was interested in African Americans
gaining control of their lives.
Effects of the Movement
The Nation of Islam had strongly believed that black separatism would solve the race problems that had been associated with the Civil Rights Movement. Overall, separatism never paved its way into American society. The reason for this was because the majority of the African American population did not support separatism.
