Long Hot Summers
Throughout the years of 1964-1968 it seemed that during the summers, it was a time for unrest, violence and riots. These events usually dragged on for long periods, seeming like it would never end.
Watts Riots
A riot occurred in Los Angeles, California five days after the president had signed the Voting Rights Act. The riot cause was because of police brutality on an African American. The riot lasted six days and required more then 15,000 members of the National Guard to settle.
Detroit, 1967
Detroit happened to be the place for many conflicts that include, burring and looting. In total, there were 43 deaths and more then 1,000 people were wounded.
Kerner Commission
The Kerner Commission blamed racism for many of the inner-city problems. The resolution that was proposed by the commission was to create more inner-city jobs and the construction of new public housing for African Americans.
Assassination of Martin Luther King
On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated while he stood on a balcony at a hotel. This was a major blow to the African Americans of the United States. He was one of the best leaders that used his words instead of violence to get his message across.
